What is a go-to-market strategy and why would I need one?
Go-to-market strategy, or GTM strategy, is a term that’s used in the business world that sometimes means different things to different people. Today, I’m going to break it down in simple terms.
If you have a good (think tangible goods like crafts, software, books, etc.) or a service (think coaching, consulting, organizing, etc.) that you want other people to use, for free or for a fee, then you need a go-to-market (GTM) strategy.
Ever have those lightbulb moments when you come up with a brilliant ideaπ‘— maybe it's a time-saving product, a game-changing service, an inspiring children’s book, or even a really great cookie recipe—and you think, "The world needs this!" But then...the all too familiar feeling of being stuck creeps in. Stuck not knowing where to start. Stuck worrying that you don’t know enough. Stuck thinking that this just isn’t the right time.
That's where a go-to-market (GTM) strategy comes in. And trust me, GTM is not just another business buzzword and it’s not only for revenue generating businesses. After spending nearly two decades navigating the education technology landscape in marketing, sales and strategy roles—from scrappy startups to enterprise giants—I've learned that success isn't just about having a great offer (product, service or blend of both). It's about getting that offer into the hands of people who'll love it as much as you do.
Think of a GTM strategy as your trusty GPSπfor business success π. Just like you wouldn't set off on a cross-country road trip without some sort of navigation (unless you're feeling particularly adventurous!), you shouldn't launch your product or service without a clear plan for reaching your destination—your ideal customers.
Here's the simple truth: If you have something you want people to use—whether it's free or for a fee—you need a GTM strategy. It's your master plan for ensuring you reach:
